Family Based Treatment

Family Based Treatment (FBT) is an evidence-based treatment plan that involves the whole family in treating a child's eating disorder. It has some of the strongest evidence for treating young people with eating disorders.

It is specifically designed for young people age 13+ who are living with family/whanau members or caregivers who can help with a young person’s eating. It involves weekly sessions that are attended by the young person and their family members. Treatment generally takes about one year.

If you or your child require acute medical care for an eating disorder, this should be accessed through your GP or emergency department and may require a higher level of care than we can provide.
