Dr Julia Somervell

Julia is a Clinical Psychologist registered with the New Zealand Psychologists Board and is a full member with the New Zealand College of Clinical Psychologists. She is also a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Clinician. Since completing her Doctorate at the University of Auckland, she has worked in adult mental health services in both Counties Manukau District Health Board and Auckland District Health Board. 

 

Her main interest and focus has been the provision of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).  She has been involved in running comprehensive programmes and supervision.  She has found both the skills and principles of DBT to be practical, effective, and broadly useful to a wide range of challenges and situations and as such they remain the foundation of her practice.  Alongside this, she uses a range of related evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE). 

 

Julia has a warm, direct, and pragmatic approach.  She is enthusiastic in her work and passionate about helping people learn new ways of being to shift their lives in the directions they choose.
